Before it reaches you, the first glass has usually been poured out and tipped back into the pot two or three times, mixing the gunpowder green with the sugar and the mint until the strength is even all the way down. The pot stays on the heat throughout, which is why the handle is wrapped. Refusing the third glass is the part that gives offence — there is a saying that the first is gentle as life, the second strong as love, and the third bitter as death.
Carved as a relief print, the arc of tea cut as one unbroken line from spout to glass.
