Norway built more than a thousand stave churches in the Middle Ages. Twenty-eight are still standing.
The ones that survived were built on stone sills rather than with the posts sunk into the ground, which is the whole difference — the rest rotted from the feet up. The frame is held by corner staves, jointed and pegged, with no structural nails. The dragon heads along the roof ridges are the same shape as the ones carved on ship prows, put there by people who had been Christian for about a century and saw no reason to take chances.
Single-ink linocut in dark pine, every roof shingle cut separately.
For anyone who drove the fjord roads and pulled over for Borgund or Heddal.
