A line of sandstone runs parallel to the shore along most of Recife's coast. It is beachrock: an old beach, buried, cemented hard and then exposed again, and it takes the weight out of the Atlantic before the water ever reaches the sand. At low tide it lifts clear and you can walk out along the top of it, surf breaking on the ocean side, warm still pools on the city side. That is the whole reason the sea at Boa Viagem lies flat while there is white water fifty metres out.
