Kahal Zur Israel opened in 1636, when Recife was the capital of Dutch Brazil and Sephardic Jews who had spent generations hiding their faith in Portugal could practise it openly for the first time anywhere in the New World. It lasted eighteen years. When the Portuguese retook the city in 1654 the community scattered, and twenty-three of them sailed north to New Amsterdam — where they became the first Jewish community in what is now New York.
The street is still there, still narrow, still lined with facades painted the colours of a fruit stall. Five of them here, cut over a black key.
For anyone who has walked down it on a Sunday with the whole street out.
