Rottnest is named after a mistake. A Dutch captain landed in 1696, saw the quokkas, took them for giant rats and wrote down 't Eylandt 't Rottenest — rats' nest island.
They are marsupials, about the size of a cat, and carry the young in a pouch. Roughly ten thousand live on the island and almost none survive on the mainland, where foxes and cats arrived. They are not tame and they are not friendly; they are simply unbothered, because nothing on Rottnest has hunted them for thousands of years.
Single-ink linocut in warm tan, the fur cut as short overlapping strokes.
For anyone who cycled the island loop and spent the afternoon being comprehensively ignored by wildlife.
