The only lizard on earth that feeds in the sea.
It dives as deep as nine metres, grazes algae off the rock, and comes out so cold it has to lie flat on black lava before its body will work properly again. The salt it swallows gets sneezed back out through a gland above the nose, which is why the head is often crusted white. In a bad El Niño year, when the algae dies back, a marine iguana shrinks — bone included, by as much as twenty per cent — and grows again when the food returns. No other vertebrate is known to do that.
