At Cingino in Piedmont the ibex go up near-vertical masonry to lick salt off the stone, on hooves with a hard outer rim and a soft rubbery centre that grips like a climbing shoe. They live above the treeline, commonly over 3,000 metres, and come down only when the snow drives them to it. By 1820 the entire species was reduced to about a hundred animals in one Italian valley, protected by a king who wanted them for hunting. Every alpine ibex alive descends from that remnant.
