Cubans call them almendrones — big almonds, for the shape.
Something like sixty thousand American cars are still running in Cuba, nearly all of them built before 1960, and almost none still has the engine it left the factory with. Parts stopped arriving in 1962, so the V8s came out and whatever would run went in — Soviet diesels mostly, pulled from Ladas, tractors and fishing boats. The bodies have been kept alive with hand-beaten panels and marine paint, which is why the colours are so flat and so bright. A working almendrón is four decades of improvisation under a 1957 roofline.
Carved as a relief print, flat side on, with the chrome left as the brightest cuts on the block.
For anyone who took one as a taxi along the Malecón and noticed it sounded nothing like it looked.
